Installing Visual Studios 6 on XP

An Old one but a good one.

If you still have to support some sort of legacy C++ software and you need Visual C++ 6 or Visual Studios 6 to install on Windows XP, but you have a problem with the MSJava dependency then here is your solution

Create an empty file in the Windows system32 directory and rename it to msjava.dll

C:\WINDOWS\system32\msjava.dll

You should now be able to install Visual Studios 6 with no issues!!

Removing System Properties from “My Computer” in XP

There are just some users that shouldn’t even be allowed to use a keyboard and a mouse.  They just like to mess with everything on a PC thinking they know what they are doing.  For one reason or another you cant take away their admin or power user rights (software they need, etc) but you can take their ability to modify your system.  Obviously you’ve taken away all the control panel icons, but how do you take away the ever popular “Properties” from the “My Computer” icon? well, this is what you need to do:

  • Open up everyone’s favorite registry editor under the users profile
  • Navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer
  • Create a new DWORD Value called NoPropertiesMyComputer
  • If you give it a value of 1 it will Hide the Properties Option, 0 will show the Properties Option
  • Reboot and Enjoy

Note: If you just want to disable the Properties Option for the Entire computer, then Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer and create the same DWORD Value as above

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer
